Wellness expert, New York Times best selling author, and humanitarian Deepak Chopra led more than 200 people into taking the first steps towards learning meditation Saturday, September 24, at the Royal Restaurant in Flushing Queens, New York.

Organized by the Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, the Queens Wellness Day was planned to encourage people deal with the stress of two long years of pandemic isolation and uncertainties.

In an official statement, President Richards said, “What these last two years have taught us, more than anything, is that we cannot take our health for granted — not just our physical health, but our mental well-being as well.”

The full day event was held at two places, with the morning event of meditation guidance by Chopra and tips for healing by Queen Afua, a holistic health expert, and an afternoon healthfair sponsored by Emblem Health at the James A. Bland Playground.

Chopra led the audience through the first steps of meditation such as deep breathing and concentrating on the breaths to attain calm and peace. Queen Afua offered wellness advice to the audience.

The afternoon session included fitness classes from Planet Fitness representatives, a self-care pavilion, food and a community-led panel to discuss Black male mental health.
