Neena Singh, New Jersey’s first Indian American woman, and first Sikh Mayor

Indian American Neena Singh was sworn in as the Mayor of Montgomery Township, the first Sikh to be a governing official of a municipality in New Jersey. Singh was unanimously selected by the Township Committee members unanimously to serve as Mayor, on Jan. 4.

Singh has been a resident of the township for about 25 years, and was on the Township Committee since 2021, including as Deputy Mayor before being selected to become Mayor.

“I feel honored and humbled to be the first Sikh woman Mayor in New Jersey and first immigrant Indian to hold this prestigious office in Montgomery and Somerset County,” Singh is quoted saying at the event, a statement posted also on the Linkedin website of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund. “The support of Montgomery residents, my Sikh community, and the encouragement of my peers in County and State Government has been a shining light in my journey of public service,” Singh added.

Her public and community service activities have also included being a Montgomery Board of Health Liaison (2023); part of the Municipal Alliance/Youth Services (2023); an Advisory Board Member, Health Mind Health Body Initiative (2017-Present); Executive Board Member, STAND central NJ (2017-Present); Economic Development Commission (2021-Present); Social Equity ambassador Keller Williams Tri-state (2020-Present); and on the Montgomery Schools – Human Relation Advisory Committee, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts- Troop 46 (2005 – 2015).

Singh is the co-founder and director of marketing at LS Client Choice, Belle Mead NJ (2015- Present), and is a senior partner at Keller Williams Cornerstone, Montgomery NJ (2009-Present)

She has a Bachelor’s degree in Arts History & Political science, and is a recipient of the New Jersey Governor’s Synergy award in 2009.

Singh is married to PJ Singh, and has three children, all graduates of Montgomery High School (Natasha, Prianka and Sahib),

She moved from Canada to the US 25 years ago.
