Many South Asian actors make the cast of Atlantic Theater’s Off-Broadway play ‘Elyria’

Off-Broadway play ‘Elyria’, produced by The Atlantic Theater Company has many noted South Asian actors and will begin stage performances February 9th, 2023 with Off-Broadway performances at the Linda Gross Theater February 27th, 2023 through Sunday, March 19th, 2023.

The cast includes many South Asian names, most of whom have professional degrees in Fine Arts from reputed Universities and have many noted performances in films, television, Broadway and Off-Broadway, while some will  be making their Off-Broadway debut. ‘Elyria’ will feature Sanskar Agarwal, Nilanjana Bose, Sanjit De Silva, Mohit Gautam, Gulshan Mia, Bhavesh Patel, Mahima Saigal, Khyati Sehgal, and Omar Shafiuzzaman.

Written by playwright Deepa Purohit and Directed by Awoye Timpo, Elyria is the story of two women who have made a deal of a lifetime, but meet again after 20 years crossing 3 continents and 2 oceans, to face their past which links their future. Elyria is a city in the metropolitan Cleveland, Ohio region, located at the forks of the Black River in Ohio. The story begins there in 1982.

The Atlantic Theater Company was founded in 1985 as an ensemble of student artists and has grown into a Tony winning Off-Broadway Theater company and currenty has Neil Pepe as the Artistic Director and Jeffory Lawson as the Managing Director.

Playwright Deepa Purohit, with many professional credentials, was born in the United Kingdom, has family roots in Ohio, East Africa, and India, and lives in New York City. With a long list of productions to his credit, Awoye Timpo is the founding producer of Classix dedicated to exploding the classical canon through an exploration of work by Black writers.

‘Elyria’ will have choreography by Parijat Desai, scenic design by Jason Ardizzone-West, costume design by Sarita Fellows, lighting design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, sound design by Amatus Karim Ali, projections by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, and casting by The Telsey Office. The stage production will be managed by Will Cantler, Karyn Casl, Destiny Lily, and Kat Meister.

‘Elyria’ can be watched at 7:00 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays; at 8:00 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; at 2:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It has matinee performance at 2pm on Wednesday March 3 and March 15. Tickets can be purchased online at atlantictheater.org or by calling AudienceView at 646-989-7996.
