The White House has nominated four people including a South Asian-American, Judge Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara, to federal district courts.

A White House statement on February 7, 2024 noted the nominees, “Are extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and our Constitution. This will be President Biden’s forty-fifth round of nominees for federal judicial positions, bringing the number of announced federal judicial nominees to 219.” Bulsara was recommended by  Senator Charles Schumer, D-NY. In a press release, Senator  Schumer noted he forwarded Judge Bulsara’s name to the Biden-Harris administration and recommended him for the position.

“Sanket Bulsara is a first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant, who is currently serving as a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York. Judge Bulsara was General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission where he worked to protect investors and the country’s financial markets,” Schumer said in the press release. “He is an expert in securities, contract, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, but his experience also extends to representing the incarcerated, victims of domestic violence, and individuals on death row in pro bono cases.”

Judge Bulsara has been a US Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York since 2017. From January – May 2017, he served as the Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Prior to this he was the Deputy General Counsel for Appellate Litigation, Adjudication, and Enforcement from 2015 at the Commission.

Among other positions, the White House statement said Judge Bulsara clerked for Judge John G. Koeltl on the US District Court for the Southern District of New York from 2002-2003. In 2002, Judge Bulsara earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, cum laude, and in 1998, he received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard College
