US Senate confirms Nisha Biswal to development finance agency

The US Senate on July 27, 2023, confirmed the nomination of Nisha Desai Biswal, as Deputy CEO of the United States International Development Finance Corporation.

Biswal, the Senior Vice President for International Strategy and South Asia at the US Chamber of Commerce, and President of the US-India Business Council, also at the USCofC, was cleared by a voice vote in the upper chamber.

“Thrilled, honored and humbled to have been confirmed by the Senate to serve as Deputy CEO of @DFCgov.” Biswal tweeted July 29. “Thankful for the many friends and colleagues who supported me through confirmation-I will do my best to make you proud! I have been privilegd (sic) to work w talented team @USChamber.”

President Biden nominated Biswal on March 20 this year.

She has had a distinguished career in government, sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs on October 21, 2013. She oversaw U.S. foreign policy and relations in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Prior to that she served from September 2010 to 2013, as Assistant Administrator for Asia at USAID, where she oversaw $1.2 billion in assistance to 22 nations.

In the House of Representatives, Biswal served as the majority clerk for the House Appropriations Committee Foreign Operations Subcommittee (HACFO) and as professional staff in the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), where she was responsible for South Asia.

In addition to her government service, Biswal led public policy at InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international humanitarian and development nongovernmental organizations, where she was the Director of Public Policy. And she worked at the American Red Cross as an international delegate in Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
