In 1997, director David Dhawan, then on a solid roll with hit after hit films delivered, directed the super-hit entertainer, Judwaa (Twins), featuring ‘two Salman Khans.’ In the year of that film’s 20th anniversary, the director made its rebooted version, Judwaa 2, featuring his star-son, Varun Dhawan in dual roles. The film too was a hit and, as a gesture, the original Judwaa—Salman Khan—made cameo(s) in it.

The 1997 song had hit music and in the 2017 version, two cult songs, Oonchi hai building and Chalti hai kya nau se barah, were re-created by composer Anu Malik with Sandeep Shirodkar. He also sang both songs (in the original too, he had sung the first song with Poornima). The re-created versions too became fairly popular.

But do you know that little Varun Dhawan was in the studio when he was recording the original Oonchi hai building ?

Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, the singing reality show format that began even before the original film’s release, recently launched the 9th season of one of its spin-offs, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs. Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon graced the special episode, Suron Ka Darbaar, as guests to promote their new film, Bhediya.

And during the shoot, judge Anu Malik made an interesting revelation. In fact, he got nostalgic about the good old recording days, and shared how Varun Dhawan was part of the recording of the original song back in the ‘90s.

Anu told Varun, “I was sitting with your father David-ji for the recording. Then, I noticed a kid who was watching us through the curtains. And then David told you to come in later because I was recording the song. At that time, I didn’t know that, years later, you will become the hero of Judwaa 2 and I will be singing the same song for you. It is surreal.” And Varun replied, “Kamaal ki baat hai that I knew it.”

So that is the original Varun Dhawan-Judwaa connection, a full 20 years before he began shooting for the reboot! Incidentally, Varun’s 2018 film, Sui Dhaaga—Made in India had original music by Anu Malik.
