On September 26 2023, South Brunswick Township in New Jersey adopted a resolution declaring October as Hindu Heritage Month.

“The Mayor and Township Council acknowledges the significant contributions made by residents of Hindu heritage to our town of South Brunswick, New Jersey and by adoption of this Resolution, seek to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the Hindu American community and urge all the residents of South Brunswick, New Jersey to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance,” the Council said while adopting the resolution.

The resolution noted that Hindu Dharma was the 3rd largest religion practiced in the world with more than a billion devotees, including 4 million in the US; that this faith had given birth to multiple other faith traditions with rich cultures and philosophies of their own, including Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, collectively referred to as Dharmic faiths; and that together these faiths represent one of the world’s oldest as well as one of the newest and fastest growing immigrant communities in the United States.

The Council said the values of the Hindu faith “have enriched our great State and City by providing invaluable solutions to many of life’s problems and often serve as a source of inspiration, reflection, and contemplation for the millions of individuals who look upon to the teachings of Hinduism for guidance.”

The resolution recognized the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam that means “The World is one family” that embraces interconnectedness, global peace and harmony, as well as the well being of the planet.

The resolution noted that in the month of October, the Hindu community in the Township of South Brunswick, New Jersey, the country and the world, “will collectively celebrate its heritage” by focusing on its culture and the diverse spiritual traditions that originate in India.
