Indian Americans welcome Director General of Police Gujarat Dr K.L.N. Rao during visit in New Jersey

The Federation of Indian Associations NYNJCTNE, honored the Additional Director  General of Police, Director General of Police, and Director-General of Prisons & Correctional Administration of Gujarat Dr. K.L.N. Rao, at the Meet and Greet session on Tuesday, May 22, at Akbar Restaurant, New Jersey.

Dr. Rao also visited the studios of ITV Gold where he was greeted by Padma Shri recipient Dr. Sudhir Parikh, chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media and ITV Gold. He was also interviewed in the ITV Gold studios for a segment to be aired. During the interview, Dr. Rao and his wife, Indu Rao, spoke of their life journeys.

Known fondly as “Bhishma Pitamaha” in the prison department, celebrated for his compassionate initiatives in enhancing the living standards of prisoners, Dr. Rao spoke of his journey as the first IPS Officer in the country to join the services with a Ph.D. at the young age of 24. He spoke about current jails and older jails in India, as well as the differences between jails in India and the US. He also spoke about his book, Jail-History and Present, and what inspires him to do what he does.

At the meet-and-greet with FiA, in attendance were Dr. Parikh, who is also the Senior advisor to FIA, as well as FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya and the executive team of the organization.

It was a significant event that celebrated the accomplishments of an extraordinary individual in the field of law enforcement, a press release from FIA said. Known for his compassionate initiatives that have greatly impacted the living standards of prisoners in Gujarat, Dr. Rao’s record of accomplishments was recounted at the event, including his commitment to prison reforms, for which he is credited with leaving an indelible mark on the Indian Criminal Justice system through his innovative and humane approach towards rehabilitation and reformation.

His dedication to improving the lives of prisoners has not only brought about positive change within the prison system but has also earned him recognition and respect from his peers and the community at large, the FIA said. And for that reason, the FIA executive team took the opportunity to honor the DG of Police during his visit to the US.

“This gesture symbolizes the appreciation and admiration of the Indian Diaspora in the USA for his unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those within the criminal justice system,” FIA said.
The DG of Police is also a published author, with his book — ‘Jail-  History and Present’–  stands as a testament to his deep-seated passion for prison reforms. The book not only reflects his extensive knowledge and experience in the field but also serves as a guide for those seeking to understand and contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve the prison system in India, FIA said in its press release.
