Dev Patel to be lead in “The Wedding Guest”

Indian American actor Dev Patel will be the lead in Michael Winterbottom’s “The Wedding Guest.”

Winterbottom broke the news to Variety at the Kolkata International Film Festival where he is part of a British Council delegation.

The film will mainly be set in India and Winterbottom has told Variety that he has met actors in Mumbai and is currently looking for locations, though plot details have not been revealed yet but principal photography is expected to start early next year.

According to the Variety report, the film will be co-produced by Winterbottom’s Revolution Films and London- and Los Angeles-based Riverstone Pictures along with Deepak Nayar and Melissa Parmenter, Nik Bower of Riverstone and Reliance Entertainment.

Patel debuted in the 2008 award winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” and has appeared in several movies set in India including “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” “Lion,” and “Hotel Mumbai.”

His performance in “Lion” earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor in 2017.

Winterbottom’s films “Welcome to Sarajevo” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” have been doing well at the box office, drawing huge crowds, his film “Trishna” was also shot in India as well as parts of “A Mighty Heart” and “Code 46.”
