Cardiological Society of India honors renowned US cardiologist Dr. Navin Nanda with B.C. Roy Award

The Cardiological Society of India honored Dr. Navin C. Nanda with the most
prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy Oration and Award at its 75th Platinum Jubilee Annual
Conference held recently December 7-10, 2023, in Kolkata, India.

The Award was bestowed for “his pioneering contributions to the development of Echocardiography/Cardiology in India over the past several decades, way more than any
other foreign physician”, according to the press release from CSI.

Dr. Navin Nanda also has the unique distinction of being the first foreign physician selected for this foremost Award named after its Founder in its 75 year old history.

Dr. Nanda was also recently honored with a Gold Medal from the Lipid Association of India for his pioneering contributions in the field of atherosclerosis in India when he was still under training in Cardiology at the Seth G.S. Medical College in Mumbai and later on in treating Asian Indians in USA. He was the first to show a high incidence of heart attacks in young Indian patients under the age 40 years..

Dr. Nanda, who has Honorary Doctorate degrees from both India and Turkey is currently Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama. He is also the President of the international Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound. He is Past President and original Incorporator of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) and Founder President and Chairman of Board of Directors of the American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin (AACIO).

The Lipid Association of India’s letter announcing the award was from Prof (Dr) Raman Puri, the senior Interventional Cardiologist, I P Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and Founder Chairman, Lipid Association of India.

Dr. Nanda is considered the world over as a pioneering cardiologist and the father of echocardiography. His innovations have provided cutting-edge advancements in the field, including three-dimensional, contrast and both conventional and color Doppler echocardiography.

Now in his 80s, he has had two medical institutes in India named after him in tribute by two former students. Trained by him in the U.S., they then went on to establish these facilities in Jaipur, Rajasthan and Nashik, Maharashtra.

Dr. Nanda is credited with developing techniques that have revolutionized the worldwide practice of modern cardiology not just for adults but also in children, infants and the fetus.

He has received awards and accolades from countries around the world, particularly from institutions in US and India.

One of the earliest citations Dr. Nanda received was from the American College of Cardiology for “enhancing cardiovascular care throughout the world” and for being a “role model for others to follow in his footsteps.”

Nanda has also been recognized by virtually all of the leading cardiology organizations and societies in India including the lifetime achievement awards from the Indian College of Cardiology, Cardiological Society of India, Indian Society of Cardiology, Indian Heart Rhythm Society and the Indian Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.
