Another bright light goes out, Indian-American Purdue University student dies

Sameer Kamath, 23, a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, was found dead Feb. 5, 2024.

According to Indian media reports, Kamath is the fifth student of Indian origin to have lost his life in the US since January this year. He is the 2nd student from Purdue found dead since Jan. 1, 2024. Just a week before Kamath’s death, computer science student Neel Acharya found dead on campus.

Kamath came to Purdue in 2021, after graduating from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a BS in mechanical engineering, He secured an impressive SAT score of 1570 out of 1600, according to his Linkedin profile, which has been memorialized after his death.

According to the The Exponent, a news journal brought out by Purdue University (purdueexponent.org), quoting information contained in a press release from the Warren County coroner, Kamath was found dead in Warren County, at about 5 p.m. Monday at NICHES land trust, a nature-preserve at Crow’s Grove,

The Mechanical Engineering community came to know of Kamath’s death Feb. 6, when it was announced by ME head Eckhard Groll.

The coroner’s results were to be available Feb. 6, but were not available as this went to press Feb. 7.

The other 3 Indian-origin students found dead since Jan. 1, include Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student at Lindner School of Business in Cincinnati; On Jan. 16, Vivek Saini, an MBA graduate, died from repeated hammer blows to his head by a homeless man in Lithonia, Georgia; and a few days later, on Jan. 20, Akul Dhawan, 18, an  Indian-American student, was found dead ostensibly from hypothermia, on the back porch of a building near the University of Illinois
