Producer-director Rohit Shetty and actor-producer-director Ajay Devgn share a long friendship that began on the sets of Ajay’s first film, Phool Aur Kaante (1991), in which Rohit was an assistant on the film. The two have collaborated professionally right from Rohit’s first film, Zameen in 2003 to last year’s Sooryavanshi in which Ajay made a cameo.

Their other films include four in the Golmaal franchise (Golmaal—Fun Unlimited, Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3 and Golmaal Again), Sunday, Ajay’s productions All The Best and Bol Bachchan, and also Singham and Singham Returns and as this same fiery cop in two cameos—in Simmba and Sooryavanshi.

Ajay has thus done the iconic characters of Gopal (Golmaal) and Singham so far in four films each. Their combined b-o. record is envious indeed: Zameen was a theatrical flop but went on to be one of the most popular films on TV and now on web, and the Golmaal franchise became the first (2006-2017) to have a fourth film, each successive one a bigger hit than the predecessor.

Right now, Rohit has had a tendency to introduce a whiff of his next film to come in each of his new movies—Simmba gave a hint of Sooryavanshi, which on release mentioned the possibility of Singham 3, and now the Cirkus climax speaks of Golmaal’s beginnings!

So will Singham Again be made next? Or Golmaal 5?

Buzz in the circles talk about the former. Mention has often been made since Simmba that Rohit will make a series of films and form India’s first-ever movie universe—with his three iconic cops, Singham, Simmba and Sooryavanshi. If one is in the lead, the others will make key cameos. Sidharth Malhotra, who is heading the cast of Rohit’s first web series, Indian Police Force, is said to the latest member of this world.

After the failure of Cirkus (Zameen only in theatres, Sunday and Dilwale despite its 100 crore collection are the only other flops this whiz-kid director has given among 15 releases in 20 years!), Rohit’s fans want him to come together once more with his favorite hero, though obviously he will also be Gopal in Golmaal 5 whenever it is made. And after the super-success of Ajay’s Drishyam 2, fans also are craving for another intense role for the actor.
