NEW YORK – The San Jose Mercury News editorial page has endorsed Indian American Vivek Viswanathan, who is running for California State Treasurer.

“The 31-year-old Democratic candidate for state treasurer understands California policy better than any other candidate we’ve interviewed this year. His mastery of complex issues surpasses most elected officials twice his age,” the editorial stated on May 11.

Viswanathan served as a policy adviser in the Clinton campaign.

He launched his campaign for the State Treasurer on January 17 and two months later, kicked off a 500-mile run which covered more than 60 towns across the state.

Viswanathan will be up against four other candidates in the primary on June 5. He has already raised $186,000 for his campaign, said reports.

The San Jose Mercury News has called Viswanathan “the standout pick for California treasurer” who would be a “great leader” if elected.

Viswanathan has most recently served as a special adviser in the office of Gov. Jerry Brown.

While he was attending Harvard, Viswanathan was the managing editor of the Harvard Political Review.

Viswanathan earned his law degree and MBA from Stanford University as well as his master’s in historical studies from the University of Cambridge.
