Shah Rukh Khan, the mega-star with an unparalleled fan following made history when he walked on the “blue” carpet at the Met Gala – as the first male Bollywood actor to do so.

But for SRK, who said, “I’m very shy” to the Vogue interviewers, it was for his kids that he came thousands of miles to be on that carpet.

Dressed in a sleek, black suit and a flowing gown, SRK, even with the bling on his chest was among the more classy and less flamboyant of those who treaded the blue carpet for a cause.

The Met Gala is the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum  Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, and is held every first Monday of May since 1948, falling this year on May 5. This year’s was meant to highlight black fashion over generations following slavery. The theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style put together by Vogue.

When Ego Nwodum, a star herself, from the famous satirical comedy show, Saturday Night Live, complimented SRK for being the first male Bollywood actor to attend the Met Gala, she asked, “Please tell us how it feels to make history tonight.”

To which, SRK in his usual humble style replied, “I don’t know about history, but I’m nervous and excited. I’m in a Sabyasachi,  who convinced me to come here. I have not been on too many red carpets. I’m very shy,” he said turning to point to the famous fashion designer who made a statement himself in his attire.

Nwodum pointed out that the carpet was blue and not red tonight – to which SRK replied jokingly –“Now I am alright. Absolutely alright,” to general merriment.

“For me the most exciting is, I have little kids who are very excited about the Met. I don’t know if I would have come here on my own, but it was Sabyasachi who said that I should come,” SRK went on to say. “They (his kids) went “Wow, they called you!”

And then gesturing to his ensemble, he said, “Tonight’s look is because I told Sabyasachi I only wear black and white, but what he designed for me is what I am most comfortable in. That’s how I think it should be.”

Sabyasachi, with his cummerbund pants and white coat and black fez-shaped hat, who had to that time stood silently, then made his mark.

“Just to give you a little context – Shah Rukh Khan is probably one of the most famous men in the world, and his fan following is legendary, and we nearly had a stampede outside the hotel when he came out,” Sabyasachi said.

“When you get a man like this on the red carpet, especially when it’s ‘black dandy,’representation is the most important thing.”

Nwodim, speaking into the camera said, “Your kids would be proud — You have to be proud of Dad. Dad did his thing”

To which SRK said, “I’ll be so cool on the carpet for my kids. Rock it. Yes.”
