Rimli Roy’s Musical ‘Ramaavan’ premiers Off-Broadway with opening night red carpet walk

Director Rimli Roy’s musical ‘Ramaavan’, based on Indian epic Ramayana, will premier Off-of-Broadway November 2, 2022 at the American Theater of Actors (Cullum Theater) at 314 West 54th Street in Times Square, New York.

Roy who performed first at the age of six, is also an artiste, choreographer, producer, and an accomplished Indian classical dancer, trained in Odissi, Bharatnatyam and Manipuri dance. The unique and original concept, script, costumes, and music of ‘Ramaavan’ were performed in 2019 in Jersey City and Hoboken, New Jersey.

Surati for Performing Arts, which presents the musical, works with culturally and ethnically diverse artists, administrators and technicians and individuals with learning and physical disabilities. Surati also runs programs for youth and children, and has awarded 50 student scholarships.

Participating in the opening night Red Carpet Walk at the American Theater of Actors at 6:00 p.m. will be Director Rimli Roy, Assistant Dance Director Sriradha Paul, and actors Peter Mah playing Ram, James Cadillac Zak playing Ravan, Lindsey Rodriguez playing Sita, Jonathan Power playing Laxman, Andrew Leonforte playing Hanuman, Melissa Lubars playing Surpanakha & Soul of Sita, and Celeste Samson playing Surpanakha & Reflection of Sita.

The English language musical with multi-ethnic and diverse international cast, is the story of Ram from the epic Ramayana. It is the story of duty, honor, love, courage, and revenge told in verse accompanied by music. It will feature classical and folk and experimental Indian dance and music. An important element of the musical will be the various world genres of musical theatre, opera, contemporary, jazz, ballet, and modern dance.
