Washington, D.C., May 9, 2025 — For the sixth consecutive year, Olivia and Liam have retained their status as America’s most popular baby names, according to the annual report released today by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The SSA’s 2024 data shows that parents continue to favor classic names. Emma and Noah also held onto their number two positions for girls and boys, respectively. Meanwhile, Luna, a recent favorite, dropped out of the top 10, making room for Sofia, which entered the elite list for the first time at number 10 among girls.

The SSA celebrates Mother’s Day each year by publishing a list of the top 1,000 baby names, compiled from applications for Social Security numbers. Commissioner Frank Bisignano marked the occasion by paying tribute to mothers.

“As Mother’s Day nears, we remember the incredible impact that mothers have on our lives,” Bisignano said. “Growing up with a working mom, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, resilience, and balance it takes to juggle both career and family. Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers in our lives who inspire us and set an example for future generations.”

Parents typically apply for a child’s Social Security number at birth during their hospital stay. The SSA urges families to complete this step early, as it provides essential protection for future benefits. An SSN is also needed to claim a child as a dependent on tax forms, open bank accounts, and purchase savings bonds.

Names on the Rise

In addition to revealing the most popular names, the SSA also highlights those rising fastest in popularity. For girls, Ailany—meaning “chief”—was the fastest climber. On the boys’ side, Truce, meaning “peace,” surged an astonishing 11,118 spots to break into the top 1,000 at number 991.
