International prostate cancer and urology oncology conference held at Mount Sinai Hospital

The Sixth International Prostate Cancer Symposium and World Congress of Urologic Oncology was held December 11-14, at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Urology, under the leadership of a top Indian American physician.

System Chair of Urology at Mount Sinai Dr. Ash Tewari organized and coordinated the four-day event which brought together urology and robotic surgery professionals from around the world. Among the highlights was the Million Strong Men initiative launched by Dr. Tewari.

“This year it was a very large gathering of over 900 registrants from around the world,” Dr. Tewari told Desi Talk. The meetings were extended to 4 days instead of the annual 3 days in previous years, he noted in an interview with News India Times.

“We launched my initiative – Million Strong Men- through which we hope to reach at least a million men around the world in the next 10 years; men at most risk of prostrate cancer – ages 45-70 years,” Dr. Tewari said.Those interested in joining this “important initiative” he said, could email him at millionstrongmen@gmail.com or at ash.tewari@mountsinai.org.

Branches for the Million Strong Men will open soon in Atlanta and New Delhi, Dr. Tewari said, adding, “We are anticipating India is going to face a tsunami of prostrate cancer in the next 10 to 20 years,” which was the main reason to press on with the initiative aimed at raising awareness among the vulnerable population and equip them with the tools needed for early detection and treatment.

Other highlights were speeches from a Nobel Laureate and holographic presentations on some subjects.

Leading experts and innovators convened at Mt. Sinai to explore advancements in research, clinical practices, and surgical techniques. Among them were Dr. Gregg L. Semenza, Nobel Laureate renowned for his groundbreaking research; and Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist.

Apart from speeches from the likes of Dr. Semenza and Dr. Mukherjee, “Every evening we gathered to speak about the translational aspects of our areas of expertise,” Dr. Tewari said.

Among the various discussions and continuing medical education seminars conducted during the 4 days were:

  • Breakthrough sessions covering Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder Cancer, presenting the latest in research and clinical innovation.
  • Live 3D surgical videos, providing immersive, real-time demonstrations of cutting-edge robotic techniques.
  • Fireside chats addressing men’s health and wellness, as well as insights into patient care.
  • Hands-on training in the Simulation Lab, where selected participants got practical experience in robotic surgery.

Organizers said this year’s symposium was more than an educational event; The program was designed to push the boundaries of urology and robotic surgery.
