‘The Spirit of Yoga,’ an International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebration, is being co-hosted by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization and the media platform ALotusInTheMud.com on June 22 at Global Harmony House in Great Neck, Long Island.

Organizers said in a press release that the program would go beyond the physical postures and public demonstrations of flexibility.

“We are focusing on yoga as a way of being – anchored in awareness, self-realization, and harmony,” Parveen Chopra, founder and editor of ALotusInTheMud.com and co-moderator of the event, is quoted saying in the press release. “Yoga, as in Patanjali’s 8-limbed path, finds its fulfillment in dhyan, asanas are just a part and accessory.”

Among the guests invited to the program are India’s Consul General in New York Binaya Srikanta Pradhan; BK Mohini Didi, the head of the Brahma Kumaris international organization; Guest of Honor Eddie Stern, of Broome Street Ganesha Temple in Manhattan; Sister Gayatri Naraine, the NGO representative of Brahma Kumaris at United Nations; Andonia Fthenakis, an integrative healing arts practitioner; and Dr. Anjali Grover.

“In today’s commercialized wellness world, yoga is often reduced to fitness,” Sister Naraine said. “But the true spirit of yoga is about connecting to our highest self, to the Supreme, through spiritual awareness.”
