Indian American physicians of Queens & Long Island celebrate Dr. Krishan Kumar’s election victory for VP of national AAPI

Leaders of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin-Queens, Long Island chapter (AAPI-QLI) met on April 25, 2028, to celebrate the election victory of one of their own – Dr. Krishan Kumar, who won the race to become Vice President of the national AAPI, the largest ethnic organization representing physicians of Indian descent. The April 25 meeting took place at Pearl Restaurant in NYC.

Speaking at the AAPI-QLI meeting, Dr. Kumar noted it was a historic moment in the history of the national AAPI that he had won the VP election in 27 years. “National AAPI is a great organization,” which represents 100,000 practicing physicians and another 25,000 medical students, Dr. Kumar said. “Every 6th patient is being treated by an Indian physician,” he added. “We shine so much that even Senators want to be treated by us,” he added. He praised the training that doctors in US received while studying in India and those were the principles according to which they practice medicine in the country of adoption, he said.

Dr. Kumar also made a reference to the recent Kashmir terror attack saying, “They want to terrorize the Modi Government. … We want to bring peace.”

Several other physicians at the meeting expressed their support for Dr. Kumar.

“I would like to give a lot of congratulations to Dr. Krishan Kumar. He really deserves it,” said Padma Shri recipient and chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media Dr. Sudhir Parikh. “In the next two years he will lead (national) AAPI. And also next year, you can joine with GAPIO (Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin), where I will be President,” he added. GAPIO represents 1.4 million doctors from around the world, Dr. Parikh pointed out.

Dr. Krishna congratulated Dr. Parikh for his leadership in GAPIO. He praised Dr. Parikh as “a real pillar” and noted his effort to bring the torch of AAPI to New York. “Thank you for all you do for us,” Dr. Krishna said.

Other physicians present at the AAPI-QLI meeting who congratulated Dr. Kumar included Dr. Abhay Malhotra, Dr. Devendra Shrivastava, Dr. Jagdish Gupta, Dr. Sanjivan Patel, Dr. Jagat Raval, Dr. Avinash Gupta, Saurin Parikh from FIA-NYNJCT.

Several women physicians of AAPI-QLI also congratulated Dr. Kumar during the victory celebrations.

Dr. Malhotra noted that for AAPO-QLI with its membership of more than 1,000 physicians, it was a victory to have Dr. Krishan elected to the national AAPI.

Dr. Shrivastava described it as a great honor to celebrate the victory of one of their own, and only the 2nd person going to a top position from AAPI-QLI to the national AAPI.

Dr. Gupta, chair of the Board of Trustees of AAPI-QLI, said he was “delighted” by Dr. Kumar’s victory. “Dr. Krishan Kumar has been an AAPI-QLI for a long time and a “trailblazer” having served as Trustee, Advisor, and leader. “I have wonderful memories of his work. I wish him to achieve greater heights.”

Dr. Sanjivan Patel said he reinforces what had been said about Dr. Kumar, and added, “Dr. Krishan Kumar will continue to take AAPI to the next level.”

Dr. Raval said he was proud of Dr. Kumar’s work at AAPI-QLI. “I am sure he will do great things for national AAPI.”

Dr. Avinash Gupta of AAPI-NJ described Dr. Kumar as an “honest, hardworking, transparent person.”

Saurin Parikh, president of FIA-NYNJCT said he  has been working with Dr. Kumar for many years, including for organizing the India Day Parade, which is held in mid-August. “He has done a commendable job throughout.”

Dr. Kumar is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. His profile while running for the VP election says he is the only physician to have chaired three academic departments – Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and EMS Academy Member- D.O. Medical Student Selection Committee of NYITCOM.

His vision and goals listed on his election platform include – Free Legal Help to all members; Enforce Accountability of all officers; Increase in Residency Slots; Open AAPI medical schools in USA and India; Strong relationship with AMA, IMA, FSMB and other associations; Augment Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.

At the national AAPI, he has been a Patron Member for more than 25 years, and has served as Treasurer; Board of Trustee member – 2014-2017; and Regional Director – 2012. During the Global Health Summits, he was among the organizers of the Continuing Medical Education speakers for at least 17 years, and also served as chair and co-chair of CME; He is one of the Founding Members of new specialties in India – Emergency Medicine Residency Program and EMS and Disaster Medicine. He has conducted multiple lectures, health camps and CPR workshops in India and abroad, and is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions.
