The leading political action committee focused on the Indian American and South Asian communities, endorsed Zohran Mamdani, candidate for mayor of New York City, who is going toe-to-toe against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The Indian American Impact Fund announced the endorsement June 11, 2025, saying “Mamdani represents a bold new voice in New York City politics—a candidate who is deeply connected to the diverse, working- and middle-class communities that make this city thrive.”

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and raised in New York City, is a New York State Assemblymember and democratic socialist, according to his campaign website.

Impact Fund noted that more than 447,000 South Asians live in New York City—the largest South Asian population in the country, and as such, “this community holds significant political power that has often been overlooked.”

Chintan Patel, executive director of Indian American Impact Fund, in a statement carried in the press release, said, “We’re thrilled to endorse Zohran Mamdani for mayor because he offers a clear vision to address the urgent economic challenges facing New Yorkers today. His focus on affordability and economic justice resonates deeply across South Asian communities and beyond.”

Describing Mamdani as a “fighter… who will stand up for fairness, protect our rights, and deliver solutions that work for all New Yorkers,” Patel went on to say, “This campaign is about more than just winning an election—it’s about changing who gets seen, heard, and prioritized in City Hall.  The path to victory runs through the long-overlooked South Asian community, and we’re thrilled to help mobilize this vital and growing electorate.”

“I’m honored to have the support of the Indian American Impact Fund, which has been a national leader in building South Asian political power. As a South Asian, an immigrant, and a Muslim, I know how important it is to have leaders who reflect our communities and fight for our values,” Mamdani said, adding, “This campaign is about building a bigger table—where every New Yorker feels seen, heard, and represented. From rising costs to threats against our rights, I’m ready to deliver a city government that works for all of us.”

Established in 2016, Indian American Impact Fund has endorsed and supported 200+ candidates across the country, marshaling upwards of $20 million to candidates and voter mobilization and policy advocacy efforts, the organization said.
