Indian-American held on rape charges in Indiana


An Indian-American man is being held in jail on charges of allegedly raping a co-worker in Indiana.

According to Tippecanoe County Jail records, a 55 year old man named Rasikbhai Parbhubhai Patel was booked on June 13, at 5:40 pm on a charge of rape. A bond of $225,000 has been placed on him according to  the ‘Inmate Booking Record.’ This information was confirmed by Lt. Matt Gard of the Lafayette Police Department.

Tippecanoe County Jail sent News India Times a photo of Patel, but Sheriff Robert Goldsmith said he had no other information to share regarding the accused.

The Lafayette Police Department spokesperson Lt. Matt Gard confirmed the details of the incident and Patel’s arrest., In an interview with News India Times, Lt.Gard said the alleged rape had taken place at around 9:30 am, when Patel was working at the Quality Inn on 4221 South Street in Lafayette.

“At that time Mr. Patel sexually assaulted one of his co-workers in the hotel. The victime reported the sexual assault to police. Detectives went to the location to investigate and later arrested him,” Gard said. Asked if any rape kit tests were conducted, Gard said, “We don’t release any results or any tests that may have been conducted.  (

A news report on (Journal & Courier) dated June 18, quotes from a ‘probable cause affidavit’ which says Patel entered a hotel room where the housekeeper was cleaning and he lifted her off the ground from behind and forcibly raped her on the bed. The housekeeper told police she had shouted out but no one could hear her as no one was around.

Lt. Gard told News India Times that the court date for Patel’s jury trial has been set for Oct. 16.
