Eid celebrations at Indian Consulate, New York to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

The Indian Muslim community from across the tri-state area gathered at the Indian Consulate in New York to celebrate Ramzan Eid along with the Consul General of India Randhir Jaiswal May 22, 2022.

“Though it was delayed by almost three weeks… next time will be done close to the Eid Day,” CG Jaiswal promised at the gathering. He was welcomed by great applause according to a press release from organizers.

Leaders of the Indian Muslim community called it a “unique and refreshing experience,” starting with the recitation of Holy Quran by Sumayya Fatima Ahmed.

Saniya Ansari, a second-generation Indian who explained to the packed hall what Ramzan is and why it is celebrated.

Ilayas Quraishi, member of the organizing committee and the Chief Operating Officer of the Parikh Worldwide Media, thanked CG Jaiswal and the staff of the Indian Consulate in New York for this event conducted after a long break.

During the event, Dilip Chauhan, the Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, was recognized. In his speech Chauhan noted how events like this provide a glimpse of the diverse culture of New York.

State Senator Robert Jackson of the 31st district on the West Side of Manhattan, congratulated’ the Consulate and the tri-state Muslim community on the occasion of the recently completed Ramadan month. He paid tribute the ‘valuable’ contributions of the vast Indian community across New York.

Former Vice President District Council 37 Ahmed Shakir, opened the event noting that the “Indian Muslim community of NY/NJ/CT come together to celebrate Eid & the 75th anniversary of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav of our great country India.” Community leaders of all faiths attended & enjoyed the program.

Those present enjoyed the diverse music and delicious food from local caterers. “India is a great nation of multiple countries in one country, which makes it ‘sare Jahan se accha Hindustaan Hamara,’ said Minhaj Khan, a part of the organizing committee. while moderating the session.

Tamkeen Khateeb, president and founder of Mohiban-e-Urdu, a cultural organization, concluded the event by thanking the Consulate General office in New York. He requested more such events be conducted to encourage the participation of different communities that make up India.

The event’s organizing committee thanked and requested the Consulate office for more participation in future events symbolizing the plural and secular values of the two great nations – India and the United States.
