Queens, New York, based Brahmin Society of New York raised funds at their Diwali gala at the Cotillion in Long Island November 11, 2022, for Long Island based local charity the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). The INN addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness in Long Island by providing for those in need.

The Brahmin Society was established in 1987 as a non profit organization. “We have been promoting and preserving culture in our communities, among the youth and all around us,” said BSNY president Ruta Dave to Desi Talk.

The BSNY has taken a fresh step of donating to a local charity. “We want to reach out to everyone in America, Indian or not. We want to help out,” said Dave who is a teacher by profession. Dave informed that BSNY has also been raising funds during calamities, and for charitable institutions.

The gala began with a Rangoli competition for the young and adults. Then followed a recognition of special guests and volunteers for continued support and dedication to the organization. Among those recognized was Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Innovation for the Mayor’s office.

Working as a team, the committee had organized cultural activities for its youth club. “We want them to know our culture and traditions,” Dave said. The evening’s celebration of Diwali also had a dinner and dance on the tunes of DJ Bobby.

“To engage our youth, we have been organizing special activities including talent shows, picnics and Valentine Day celebrations,” Dave said. The regular activities of BSNY include religious Poojas, the annual Janoi changing ceremony, Navratri and Diwali celebrations.
