A student of Indian origin has died over the Memorial Day weekend in Northwestern University. The cause of death is yet to be determined.

According to the University website, the Dean of Students Todd Adams informed university students through an email about the death of Ananya Agarwal, a senior at Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, who came from Mumbai. No foul play is suspected, according to North by Northwestern, the news site of the University.

“Ananya is remembered for his jovial, energetic personality, who selflessly cared about his friends and brothers and was deeply committed to his academic pursuits,” Adams said in the email, according to North by Northwestern.

Agarwal appears to have been a stellar student, a chemistry major doing polymer research in the chemistry department, who had received the Chemistry Department Scholar Award for his research and honors thesis.

He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha fraternity at Northwestern and played the alto saxophone in the University marching band, according to the website.

His Twitter account appears to have only older entries left, the last one going back to Jan. 12, where he posted the picture of a mock-up chemistry shelf with pipes and bottles, saying “Back at my hood after a whole month!#RealTimeChem #UndergfradResearch” From the entries, it appears he was in Phuket, Thailand, on Dec. 21, 2017showing a picture of a peaceful beach with a palm tree, saying, “Getting some early morning manuscript writing by the beach #realtimechem #beach #chemistry #Phuket.”

According to North by Northwest, Agarwal’s LinkedIn page shows he had also been the editor of The Northwestern Chronicle and sang with the Men in Black a cappella group.

The University is expected to hold a memorial service the details of which are yet to be announced.
