NEW YORK – Fans and movie-goers will be seeing a whole new avatar of Aamir Khan in his upcoming movie Secret Superstar.

Directed by Advait Chandan, starring Zaira Wasim and himself, Khan plays the character of an arrogant, obnoxious and flirtatious music director in Mumbai who is touched by a young, spirited girl from Baroda, Gujarat who lives in a conservative household and has a dream to become a singer.

In a press conference screened live from India for media in New York, Khan said that being a creative person, he does not look at the commercial aspect of a film and since this is the eighth film he is producing, he chose the script because it was heart-touching and mentioned the fact that he always follows his heart when choosing which kinds of films to do.

Khan also said that his previous film Dangal, was about women’s empowerment and that Secret Superstar is too but looks at the topic from a different angle.

“When I make a film, I don’t think about which issue I have to make it on. In fact I don’t even focus on the issue because my primary responsibility is to entertain,” Khan said, in response to a question by News India Times, emphasizing the fact that not each and every one of his films deals with a social issue.

Chandan, who grew up watching Khan’s films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikhandar, Lagaan and Rangeela, always dreamt of working for Aamir Khan Productions.

“It was a childhood dream to work at Aamir Khan Productions and cast him,” he said adding that he feels blessed that he got to work there for 10 years, manage it for four years and assist Kiran (Rao) on Dhobi Ghat and that he “wanted to make a film about a teenage girl in small town India who has a lot of hopes and aspirations.”

Wasim, on the other hand said that it was difficult for her to relate to her character as her parents always gave her the freedom to do anything and as an actor was disturbed after reading the scripts of both films.

As Khan mentioned, he does not look at the issues and make films based on them and since both of the films talk about women empowerment; it is just a mere coincidence that they have been released back to back under his banner.

Khan is excited about his next film Thugs of Hindustan too, as he will be working with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time.

Secret Superstar is set to release on October 19.
