The Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party, OFBJP, Chicago chapter, held a “Chai Pe Charcha” on the lines of similar chats held by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to celebrate “Anti Black Money Day.” More than 250 supporters of the BJP attended the event held at Jalaram Mandir Chicago Nov. 20.

Amar Upadhyay, the OFBJP national gen secretary, explained the organization’s goals and activities and urged attendees to listen to the “Chai Pe Charcha” program to clarify any doubt on Modi’s demonetization policy adopted by the government of India a year ago.

Several speakers from the Chicago community spoke about the positive aspects of demonetization, claiming that it had led to an unprecedented increase in tax compliance; scrutiny of suspect accounts using advanced data analytics tools; bringing black money out into the open and acting against shell companies; as well as an increase in bank deposits and reduction in corruption and cronyism. The recent Moody’s rating agency raising India’s standing was also discussed.
