Hundreds expected at Global Health Care Summit 2019 in Hyderabad, focus on ideas, policies

The Global Health Care Summit 2019, scheduled to be held in Hyderabad July 21-24, will bring hundreds of physicians from around the world to discuss innovation, ideas and policies that could contribute to improving services in India and elsewhere.

Started 10 years ago, this annual event, which is organized jointly this year by the  American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, AAPI, the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, GAPIO, and the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, BAPIO, has become a key meeting place for experts and representatives from countries as far apart as the United Kingdom and Australia.

Dr. Suresh Reddy, the incoming president of AAPI, told Desi Talk that like other years, the Summit is held in the hometown of the AAPI President and as such, will be in Hyderabad, his hometown, at the Taj Krishna hotel. Dr. Reddy is currently Chief of Radiology at Hines Medical Center, Associate Professor of Radiology at Loyola Medical Center in Chicago, and Affiliated Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School for almost a decade.

“My focus at the Summit will be on medical education of students and health education of lay persons. It will be more about the exchange of ideas and policies,” Dr. Reddy said.

There will be around 8 workshops on various aspects of medicine including on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ayushman Bharat health insurance policy implementation.

Approximately 200 physicians from the U.S. and another 300 from India and other countries, especially Australia, United Arab Emirates, and U.K. are expected at the meet.

A session on women’s health, awards ceremony to recognize achievements, a CEO forum for those involved in the healthcare industry, tele-medicine, medical tourism and including NGOs in the health field, will be part of the conference.

Among the distinguished guests invited to the Global Health Care Summit in Hyderabad are – India’s Vice President Venkaiah Naidu; India’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash nadda; Dr. Harsh Vardhan, India’s minister of Science and Technology; and top elected officials of Telangana.

Also invited are Dr. Pratap C. Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals, who along with Sangeetha Reddy, are the chief patrons of the conference. Others include Dr. Prem Reddy, president and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services; U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and leaders of other healthcare corporates, health education agencies,

Among the senior advisors for the Global Health Summit are Padma Shri Dr. Sudhir Parikh, treasurer of GAPIO, and chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media and ITV Global, as well as entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Kiran Patel, Dr. Sampath Shivangi of Mississippi and numerous other distinguished physicians and alumni from U.S. and India.

Dr. Reddy also spoke briefly with News India Times about what he plans to do after he takes over formally as the president of AAPI in the June convention.

“My goal for this year is to bring more young physicians into the country through recruitment and residency placements – they are our future,” Dr. Reddy said.

Finding mentoring for medical students and for high school students wanting to go into medicine, is another of Dr. Reddy’s goals as president of AAPI.

“And I want to have a strong presence in Washington for a voice in national health policy,” he added.
